The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Aug. 25, unanimously voted to “act on a Resolution authorizing certain actions, including proceedings in eminent domain to acquire fee simple title and temporary construction easement to certain property in connection with the Key Allegro Bride Project, authorizing the city manager to execute all necessary documents to institute eminent domain proceedings, and directing the city attorney to initiate condemnation proceedings.”
That action was taken after meeting about the matter in executive session.
The city must attain the easements before utility relocation work and actual construction can begin on the new bridge.
The Key Allegro bridge was seriously compromised by Hurricane Harvey, and then again during a later rain event. Traffic has been limited to one lane, regulated via traffic signal, since that time.
The city’s planned issuance of $20 million in certificates of obligation included $650,000 for the purchase of Key Allegro Bridge easements. A decision about the CO issuance has now been delayed to May 2021 after petitioners gathered enough signatures to force a vote on the issuance.
