Aransas County Navigation District (ACND) commissioners, at their regular meeting Monday, July 18, heard a report, as presented by ACND Chairman Malcolm Dieckow, about Tule Watershed Management Plan (TWMP).
“(Aransas County Road and Bridge Engineer) David Reid is working on a plan that is very interesting,” said Dieckow. “The goal is to provide water quality for Little Bay, habitat, and the best drainage plan.”
Dieckow said he heard a report by Reid about the plan at the Aransas County Stormwater Committee meeting.
“If the City, County, and ACND get together on this, it would dovetail with (what is being done through) Clean Coast Texas (CCT),” said Dieckow. “I think it’s a good idea whose time has come.”
Dieckow said he has been told the Tule drainage basin contributes 90% of the drainage into Little Bay.
“I think we can agree (the diversion of Tule Creek to Aransas Bay) is the answer,” he said.
Harbor Master Keith Barrett asked if the TWMP will dovetail with CCT’s plans.
“Yes,” said Dieckow. “It will focus on diversion (of Tule Creek). This type of partnership works good.”
Commissioner Mickey Casterline said, “I like diversion. Seems like all we’ve done is talk (about) dumping into Little Bay.”
Dieckow said the TWMP recognizes the importance of diverting a portion of Tule Creek to Aransas Bay, as opposed to it all draining into Little Bay.
“Once (diversion) is done, then we need to look at the number of drains (entering) Little Bay,” he said.
“This is another example of a new era in cooperation (between entities),” said Commissioner Tommy Moore. “I’m excited.”
Anchor QEA’s Charles Belaire said CCCT is “plugged into” what Reid is doing.
Dieckow noted the TWMP will also address flooding issues in the watershed.
In answer to a question from Commissioner Judy Vlasek, Belaire noted retrofitting drainage pipes with sediment traps etc. is being addressed by CCT. He thanked GLO representative Randall Freeze for the work he has done on this matter, informing the GLO about local needs.
“The Tule Creek watershed is highly developed and will continue to be developed,” said Dieckow. “This is a critical time. Something has to be done.”
