Rockport has been nominated for the 2020 USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards for Best Coastal Small Town.

Other towns nominated include Chincoteague Island, VA, Sandusky, Ohio; Georgetown, South Carolina; Rockport, Maine; Grand Marais, Minnesota; Cannon Beach, Oregon; Cambria, California; St. Mary’s, Georgia; Venice, Florida; Southport North Carolina; Apalachicola, Florida; Wailea, Hawaii; Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; Bayfield, Wisconsin; Beach Haven, New Jersey; Friday Harbor, Washington; Los Osos, California; Gulf Shores, Alabama; and Mystic Connecticut.

Each town has a population of fewer than 25,000, according to the contest website.

Rockport’s population is around 8,500. It was ranked No. 6 in votes as of the morning of Thursday, June 4.

A panel of five travel experts made the nomination for all cities under consideration, but the final ranking will be determined by popular vote.

“The Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce encourages all its friends, residents and visitors to vote daily,” said Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce (RFCC) President/CEO Diane Probst.

Sandy Jumper, Vice President of Marketing and Promotions at the RFCC said, “Rockport placed #5 in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice for Best Coastal Small Town in 2015, #4 in 2016 and #2 in 2019. Help us secure the title for 2020!”

One can vote once per day by visiting the USA Today Readers’ Choice website or the ‘VisitRockportFulton’ Facebook page. Votes can be cast from any and all electronic devices until polls close at 12 p.m. Eastern Time Monday, June 29. The 10 winning small towns will be announced on July 10.

Other recognition by USA Today 10 Best in the area were Rockport Beach, receiving recognition in 2018 as Texas’ Best Beach and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge was named #5 Wildlife Refuge in 2015 and #1 for Birding in 2016.

The Rockport-Fulton area also has been recognized as the Top 40 Destinations in Texas as #6 by Texas Highways Magazines; Texas’ First Blue Wave Beach by the Clean Beaches Council; Top 100 Best Small Art Towns by the National Art Association; #5 Long Weekend Hot Spot for Spring Migration by Bird Watching Magazine; #7 Coolest Small Town in America by Budget Travel, among other accolades.
