More than 50 artists, including four from Rockport and others from California to Massachusetts and Canada and the Netherlands will be featured in Shorelines, the Rockport Center for the Arts first ever international juried exhibition.  The exhibit opened today and runs through Saturday, Nov. 21. A prize award reception with the artists will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, from 5 until 7 p.m. also at the Center.

The four Rockport artists are Lisa Baer, Al Barnes, Shirley Blackman, and John Martell.

The exhibit will feature excellence in coastal-inspired art.  Nearly 200 artists entered the international call for entries and selected artists will be exhibiting in watercolor, oil, pastels, photography, printmaking, video, and mixed media.

John Aäsp, Director of Visual Arts, and exhibit coordinator said, “A huge percentage of the American population lives within an hour of the coastline. Water and the shore really touch people and with Rockport being one of the top 10 artists colonies, we felt like the Center was a natural host for such an event.”

Entries were juried by Joseph Schenk, Director of the Art Museum of South Texas, and prizes will be awarded by Franklin Sirmans, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection in Houston.

Shorelines promises to be a milestone event for the Rockport Center for the Arts. With the addition of the exhibit they hope to hold every two years, the Rockport Center for the Arts joins the ranks of some of the best coastal art festivals including the likes of Carmel Arts Festival in Carmel, CA and the International Marine Exhibition in Mystic Seaport, CT. Shorelines has been made possible by The Margaret Sue Rust Foundation in memory of Lola L. Bonner.
