Lady Pirates defeated 35-57 by Ray in district

The Rockport-Fulton High School Lady Pirate varsity basketball team fell to state-ranked Corpus Christi Ray, Tuesday, Jan. 6 by a 35-57 score.
The Lady Pirates are now 2-1 in district and 17-4 on the season.
Head coach Chris Bentley said, “I obviously did a poor job of preparing them.”
“I expected them to play harder than they did.”
He said the Lady Pirates did not play up to their potential, but added that will not happen again.
RFHS was outscored 6-11 in the first quarter.
The Lady Texans scored first, but not until almost half the quarter was gone, with 4:15 showing.
In the final 3-1/2 minutes, Brandi Huff scored three goals while Ray nailed three three-pointers, the final at the buzzer to take the five-point lead.
In the second, Mariechen Spivey scored the first point on a free throw. Almost two minutes passed before either team scored, then Morgan Albrecht sank a goal with 4:56 on the clock. The Lady Pirate trailed 9-11.
Ray followed with the next three points, before RFHS scored again with a basket by Huff. They still trailed 11-14.
The hosts went on a seven-point run to increase their lead to 10, 21-11.
Chandra Dixon scored a three-pointer with 52.3 on the clock. Ray hit a three of their own at the buzzer to regain the 10-point lead, 24-14, at the half.
The Lady Pirates were dominated in the third as they were outscored 21-7.
Ray scored the first seven points. The Lady Pirates netted a three-pointer by Chandra Dixon with 4:25 on the clock. RFHS trailed 17-31 at that point.
The Lady Texans answered with a eight-point run to increase their lead, 39-17.
With under two minutes to player, Huff hit back-to-back goals. Ray countered with the final six points of the quarter to lead by 24, 45-21.
The Lady Pirates outscored Ray 14-12 in the final period, but it was not enough.
The quarter opened with a bucket from Spivey, but it was answered by one from Ray.
At the 6:11 mark, Erika Williams sank two free throws.
In the next two minutes, Ray scored a free throw and a basket, to lead 50-25.
At the three minute mark, Dixon sank two free throws. Ray responded with a goal of their own.
Williams sank a goal with 2:42 left. The Lady Texans scored three of four free throws in the next minute of play.
In the final 55 seconds, Taylor Patek scored two three-pointers and Ray sank one bucket for the final margin of victory.
Huff led in scoring with 12 points, and was 0 for 2 in free throws.
Others who scored are Dixon, eight, 2 for 2; Patek, six, two three-pointers; Williams, four, 2 for 2; Spivey, three, 1 for 2; and Albrecht, two.
The Lady Pirates hosted Gregory-Portland last night and will travel to Beeville Tuesday, Jan. 13 for a 6:30 p.m. game.
