Two people were injured and one citation was issued after an accident which involved three vehicles occurred on the Highway 35 bypass Monday, Jan. 5 about 5:45 p.m.

According to a report by Rockport Police officer Andrew Valdez, the incident occurred in the 2000 block of the bypass at its intersection with the 1600 block of Corpus Christi Street.

Charles Whitney, 78, of Rockport was eastbound on the crossover of west Corpus Christi Street. He was driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup when he was struck by another vehicle.

Crystal Rae Latham, 30, of Port Aransas was northbound on the bypass. She was driving a 1996 Crown Victoria.

Whitney reportedly failed to yield right of way while crossing the highway and was struck by Latham's vehicle. That impact caused the Crown Victoria to impact a third vehicle, a 1999 Ford F350, which was stopped at the stop sign facing west on Corpus Christi Street.

Whitney's pickup, according to witnesses, went airborne and came to rest on the grassy area on the east side of the northbound lane.

Neither the driver of the Ford, Lowell Kludy, 73, of Shelby, MS, nor his wife who was a passenger, were injured.

Whitney was transported to a Corpus Christi hospital by HALO-Flight. He was traveling alone.

Latham had to be extracted from her vehicle by Jaws of Life equipment. There were no other occupants in her vehicle. She was transported by ground ambulance to Spohn Memorial.

The extent of their injuries was unknown at press deadline.

One citation was issued to Whitney for failure to yield right of way at a yield sign.
