Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
We sure have a mess downtown. As a member of the old guard I should have attended a meeting or two to find out what they were going to do, but I thought as one of the oldest merchants I would sit back and let the folks who will be involved in the downtown for the next 20 years do their thing. Boy was I wrong.
For some reason someone thought we had a parking shortage on Austin Street, which might be true on the 4th of July, but the rest of the year we have zip, zero, nada. Even on the 4th people may have to park a half block away and walk, oh my goodness. As far as handicapped parking we need perhaps a slot or two on each block and that would be plenty to serve the city of Rockport.
Our Heritage group did a fine job in securing a grant for the new work, but with money burning a hole in their pocket they launched into this project with little or no foresight. I actually have less parking in front of my shop than I had before. What I thought was going to be a first class project with perhaps some nice tree planters, or cobblestone work, is nothing more than a slab of concrete pitched toward my front door awaiting the first gully washer.
It's my understanding they intend to do all of Austin Street. Please don't let them screw up anymore than they have done already.
Sincerely yours,
Paul Bleicher
Dear Editor:
Well A.I.G. is at it again with more billions they want to shore up their company, but it seems they have enough for lavish parties for their officials.
Wouldn't it be better to help our struggling automobile companies to stay afloat? We have only three surviving companies left, and without help they will soon be gone. Who then will supply our armed forces with tanks, cars, trucks, aircraft, motors and such? In WWII Willys made jeeps, Studebaker made trucks, Packard made aircraft motors, Graham Paige also made aircraft motors, Ford and GM made tanks and trucks. Hudson and Nash were in the war effort also. Chrysler made command cars, marine engines, etc.
Today three companies are left, and without them we would be helpless in case of a major war. I'm for supporting businesses like them because they are sorely needed also, tens of thousands of people would be without work.
Respectfully,
Rev. Carlton D. Wetherell
Dear Editor:
Wow what grace. Anita O'Rourke is such a lady, so graceful, positive, and just all-around wonderful. She thanked all of us with such love and her usual spectacular smile. She is strong, brave, and easy to admire.
I have learned it is really hard to vote Democrat in Aransas County, but I just love it here. I stood outside of precinct 4 with O'Rourke and Juan Garcia stickers all over me. It was voting day and my birthday. I actually had a great time. Yes, there were quite a few frowns because of the Democratic stickers, but I made a lot of people laugh that day. For that short period of time I forgot how hard my life is without the love of my life for the first time in 10 years.
Thank you all for coming out to vote. I am so proud of everyone who utilized their right to vote. I hope we all continue to keep this spirit up. We are so fortunate to have the rights we have. We are all important.
Sincerely,
Ann Emery
