VEGA

On Sunday, October 12, 2008 at the age of 106, the Reverend Antonio Carbajal Vega was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was born on June 13, 1902 in Cuero. He was a hard-working man who spent his time providing for his family and devoting his energy into his ministry. On January 15, 1962, Reverend Vega founded the UPLC Mount Sinai Church of Rockport. We were truly blessed to have this special man in our lives. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great great-grandfather, and friend. He was also a great teacher, mentor and counselor, who many admired and truly respected.

Prior to his conversion to his Lord and Savior, Reverend Vega enjoyed playing baseball. His love for baseball remained until he lost his eyesight almost 2 years ago. In his younger days, he played ball in the Bee County area, playing as catcher, shortstop and center field. On his 101st birthday, he celebrated with 17 members of his family by going to see the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park (now Reliant Center) in Houston. But his true love was sharing the gospel to all who would listen.

Reverend Vega is the last survivor of 13 children born to Juan and Estefana Vega. Preceding Reverend Vega in death was Mrs. Antonia Segovia Vega, his devoted wife of 64 years; his daughter, Adela Sanchez; his grandson Michael Vega; and sons-in-law, Raymond G. Chavez and Marion (Nick) Huckaby.

He is survived by his son Israel Vega of Beeville; daughters Soveida Huckaby of Rockport, Mary (Ruben) Mauricio of Gainesville, GA, Diana Chavez-Rivera (Elbert Rivera) of Rockport, Rachel (Santos) Montemayor of Houston, Martha (Eloy) DeLeon of Rockport, Naomi (Ignacio) Aguiar of Rockport, and daughter/granddaughter Liz Sanchez of Rockport. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family of Antonio C. Vega express their deep gratitude for the wonderful care provided by the staff of AIM Hospice. In addition, the family wishes to thank Reverend Lisa Garza and Stacie Pena Barrera.

Visitation was held from noon until 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home, Rockport. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel, Rockport with interment to follow at Aransas Memorial Park.
