Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
I believe - acting out of journalistic integrity - you should consider publishing the facts regarding Barack Obama being pro-infanticide in some circumstances and his being anti-freedom of conscience.
Obama's public support for and advocacy of infanticide is well known in the situation in which a child is born alive after an abortion (the facts regarding which are publicly available in the discussion of the efforts to pass the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act which was defeated by Obama when he was an Illinois state legislator).
The court-created right to abortion ends once the child is born and is no longer in the mother's womb. No matter how one tries to stretch the right of privacy about which the right to abortion was based, it is not implicated once there is no more privacy, once the child is outside the mother. Obama has publicly stated he thinks the right to abortion should be extended so the mother, and the mother alone, can make the decision to let the child who has survived her abortion die.
Obama has said one of his first actions as president will be to sign into law the so-called Freedom Of Choice Act which has no freedom of conscience exception for healthcare providers. The Democrat party stated this in its 1996 and 2000 party platforms: The Democratic Party is a party of inclusion. We respect the individual conscience of each American on this difficult issue, and we welcome all our members to participate at every level of our party.
You cannot find this “conscience” clause in the Democrat party's 2008 platform. Why? Because this would directly contradict the requirements of the Democrat-sponsored so-called Freedom Of Choice Act.
According to the Catholic bishops in their statement about voting, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, it is not possible for a Catholic with a well-formed conscience to vote for someone who advocates infanticide and who is anti-freedom of conscience.
Very truly yours,
Guy McClung
Dear Editor:
I have fished the Rockport area all my life and have family here. Because of the crowds and heat we have become very proficient night fishermen and for years have used the beach park to launch for its proximity and safe travel to our fishing destinations.
I cannot understand why the city locks up this public-owned park and restricts the use of one of the best ramps in the county. If you night fish like we do or flounder, the beach park is unavailable until it opens the next day. I know we are in the minority when it comes to using this facility late night but it is very sad the powers-that-be have taken one of the few public waterfront properties away from the people during this time period.

Dear Editor:
I would like to endorse Karl Boyd Hoepfner's letter to the editor of several weeks past regarding the flying of our American flag. As a veteran of Vietnam and 26 years of service in the United States Navy, I fly our flag most days to honor the many who have given everything for the life we enjoy under its protection.
I also often walk the Rockport Cemetery and enjoy the flags which pay tribute for so many there; however, it saddens and angers me those who pay tribute to others by displaying the flag on the graves sometimes forget their responsibility in maintaining those flags. Flags should be kept off the ground; those which are frayed or fallen should be disposed of appropriately. Proper disposal is by dignified ceremonial burning; please do not ever dispose of an American flag in the garbage. Many service organizations will accept your flags for appropriate disposal; among them is the American Legion which is open most afternoons.

Dear Editor:
As the state representative election heats up I read a lot about Juan Garcia's opponent having recently been a lobbyist for the Texas Windstorm Association. This bothers me. Why would we want a former lobbyist to represent us against his old cronies? Haven't we had enough of that type of representation by the current administration with their old cronies in Halliburton and the rest of the oil industry?
I think we should stick with a winner. Garcia has recently been promoted to full commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He promised to make sure votes of representatives were recorded and made public, and it happened. He is helping veterans to register and fighting for better health and educational facilities for all of us. He has set up offices throughout his district to listen to his constituents and is available to everyone who wishes to speak with him. Garcia has been the best representative we've had in the 18 years I've lived here and this warrior/citizen/representative has my vote and the votes of most of my friends, be they Democrat, Republican or Independent.

Dear Editor:
As a labor and employment lawyer who works with law enforcement officers all around Central and South Texas, I have dealt with many county attornies for the last 15 years. I have seen many counties (including our Aransas County) have to hire outside counsel, at taxpayer expense, to handle labor and employment issues which were, apparently, too complicated for the elected county attorney.
To avoid such needless expense to the taxpayers of our good county, it is imperative we elect Anita O'Rourke as our next county attorney. She has the background and experience we need in this important job.
Sincerely,
John Curtis
