U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison attended a kickoff event for the Texas Maritime Museum's 20th anniversary Monday, Aug. 11.

The stop was the sixth of the day for the senator who has embarked on a three-day, 16-stop, 600-mile bus tour along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Her day began in Harlingen, and she continued through Raymondville, Sarita, Kingsville, and Corpus Christi.

The anniversary event at the museum was co-hosted by the TMM board and the Rockport-Fulton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Upon her arrival, the senator was greeted by about 140 visitors as she entered the museum.

Aransas County Judge C.H. “Burt” Mills welcomed Hutchison calling her not only a “great lady, but also a great Republican senator, a great Texan and a great fellow American.”

TMM board president Ken Craven and TMM CEO Kathy Roberts-Douglass welcomed the senator, and Roberts-Douglass presented a brief biography about Hutchsion.

Hutchison called the museum a treasure, stating, “I love how you are preserving maritime history.”

She called the LaSalle collection an important find as they continue to learn more about it.

She thanked the TMM board for allowing her to be part of the 20th anniversary kickoff.

She talked about her planned trip which continues up the coast to Victoria, Port Lavaca, Wadsworth, Lake Jackson, Texas City, Galveston, High Island, Port Arthur, Liberty and ends at the San Jacinto Monument in La Porte.

Referring to her stop at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, the senator joked she would have to speak to her staff about setting up events “with dolphins swimming behind me.”

She said there is so much along the Gulf Coast which contributes much to this state. “I am excited to see it all by bus,” the senator said.

She then talked about issues she is dealing with in Washington D.C. which also are important to Texans.

She talked about the energy crisis, noting it must be addressed on a bipartisan basis.

She said there are a majority in Congress who do not believe we should drill for oil and natural gas in this country. She said drilling along the Gulf Coast is an example of how it can be done while at the same time keeping the environment clean and protected.

Speaking while standing near the La Salle artifacts, Hutchison said, “I don't say too many nice things about the French, but they have done one thing right. They have invested in nuclear power which provides 80 percent of the energy in France.”

Hutchison said it is environmentally safe, clean, cheap and abundant.

She added, “If France can do it, America can do it twice as well.”

She then talked about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge stating many environmentalists do not want to drill there. She explained it is the size of the state of South Carolina, and the area to be drilled is about the size of Hobby Airport in Dallas, only about 2,000 acres. She said the people of Alaska are in agreement with drilling there. In addition, the amount of oil produced would be the same as what is being shipped from Saudi Arabia.

She said the United States needs energy independence and it's time to push for a real energy solution by drilling from our own natural resources.

Her final words were of support for U.S. troops as well as veterans and assuring they receive the medical care they need.

She concluded by thanking the board for allowing her to help celebrate the museum's 20th anniversary.

After her speech, those in attendance lined up to speak individually to the senator.

Hutchison also briefly toured the museum before making her departure.

" Fascinating! So these 2 guys have developed computer models that are better than all the models and efforts of the 1000s of climate scientists working on this over the last 30 years? Amazing. Especially since neither of them have any apparent background in climate science!
Instead of presenting this to the scientific world in a peer reviewed journal, these guys publish it in this book in an attempt to sway public opinion. I could go on as many of the statements in this article are misleading, or blatantly ludicrous. Suffice it to say, it looks to me like this book is much more about influencing public opinion than any scientific review of whether human activity is causing climate change.
It is sad some people will believe this as fact. "
