One woman was killed and three others were transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital after a one-vehicle rollover at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday on FM 1781, between that highway's intersection with Spanish Wood Drive and Copano Drive.
According to information from the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the accident occurred when the driver of a 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, southbound on FM 1781, lost control of the vehicle after rounding a curve, drove off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected, and crossed both lanes of traffic. The pickup then traveled across the grassy area between the highway and Copano Drive. At some point it became airborne, flipping at least once, and coming to rest upside down in the 3600 block of Copano Drive.
During that turn of events, Nancy Smith Farmer, 51, of San Antonio, was thrown from the pickup. She came to rest face down in the middle of the road, a good distance north from where the pickup came to a stop. Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Martin DeLeon pronounced her dead at the scene.
Those injured in the accident are Heather Hutchins, 21, of Friendswood; Thom Hutchins, 40, of Friendswood; and Roderick Bertsinger, 67, of Aransas Pass.
All three surviving passengers were transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital. T. Hutchins was transported via HALO-Flight. The Aransas County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported H. Hutchins and Bertsigner. At the scene, T. Hutchins appeared to be the most seriously injured. H. Hutchins had to be restrained in handcuffs by an Aransas County Sheriff's deputy before being transported.
According to DPS secretary Sharron Loflin, the accident is still under investigation. The identification of the driver of the vehicle has not been verified.
