All-star team wins District 29 championship

The Rockport-Fulton Little League junior league all-star baseball team captured the District 29 championship last week before falling in the sectional playoffs.

The team is comprised of Ray Allen, Aaron Arjona, Zack Brown, Austin Gibson, Trotter Jahn, Alec Ledger, Gabriel Morales, Tony Kawczynski, Chance Marshall, Issiah Mendiola, Riley Pash, Lionel Pina, and Skylor Womble. They were coached by Manager Robbie Gibson, and coaches John Solis and A.J. Naranjo.

The team opened the tournament with a 17-2 victory over Beeville behind the pitching of Marshall. he pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14.

In going 2 for 3, Pash hit two doubles. Gibson, Brown, Ledger and Morales were each 2 for 3, and Marshall went 2 for 4.


In their next game, the local boys defeated Gregory-Portland 16-5. Gibson went the distance and had six strikeouts.

At the plate, Arjona was 3 for 3; Allen, Ledger and Morales, 2 for 3; Pash, 2 for 4 (one double); and Jahn and Kawczynski, 1 for 1.

The R-F team suffered its first loss to Sinton by a 4-15 score.

The coaches said the team struggled in the game, committing five errors.

Marshall pitched the entire game and had six strikeouts. Arjona went 3 for 4 and Ledger was 1 for 2.

The R-F seniors then bounced back in the lower bracket with a 12-3 victory over Aransas Pass. Gibson pitched the win and struck out nine.


Marshall, Gibson, Brown, and Pash all went 2 for 3. One of Pash's was a double.

The all-stars faced Refugio and handed them a 13-0 loss.

Marshall pitched the no-hitter and struck out six.

The coaches said the team played great defense, and offensively were more patient at the plate and hit well.

Gibson, Arjona, Pash, and Morales each went 2 for 3. One of Morales' was a double.

Ledger went 2 for 4; Brown, 2 for 2; Jahn and Mendiola were each 1 for 1.

A 13-1 victory over Cotton Belt put the Pirates in the championship game.

Gibson pitched the entire game and struck out five. At the plate, Brown was 2 for 2; Gibson, Arjona, Pash, and Morales, 2 for 3 each; Ledger, 2 for 4; and Jahn, 1 for 1, a double.

Since they already had one loss, the R-F boys had to beat Sinton twice.

In the first game, the local team handed Sinton a 16-6 loss.

Marshall started on the mound and struck out three. Morales came on in relief for the save and one strikeout.

Brown went 3 for 4; Morales was 2 for 3; and Womble and Allen were each 1 for 2.

The R-F all-stars then had to play Sinton again that same night.

Although the team was down to its last three pitchers, the boys came through for a 10-9 victory in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homerun.

Trailing 7-9, and with two on base, Arjona blasted one over the fence to score three and win the game. He was 2 for 4 at the plate.

Kawczynski started for the R-F all-stars, giving two full innings.

Brown came on in relief in the top of the third and finished the game with three strikeouts. He held Sinton to two runs.

Ledger went 3 for 4 in the game and scored three runs. Pash went 2 for 3 and Gibson was 2 for 5 with a double. Marshall went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice. Womble and Pina were each 1 for 1.

The team advanced to sectional playoffs in Victoria and suffered heartbreaking back-to-back losses to Victoria Northwest and New Braunfels.

R. Gibson gave much credit to his coaches and to the parents for the success of the team. He pointed out it was a team effort of players, parents and coaches to maintain a 13-player roster throughout the tournament.
