Aransas County animal control seized control of 53 dachshunds in connection with an animal cruelty case which resulted in the animal owner being found guilty and fined.

According to animal control lead officer Audrina Crisp, the situation came to their attention about three weeks ago. An individual answered an advertisement from an area newspaper regarding the sale of dachshund puppies. When the individual arrived at the home to see the dogs, the potential customer was appalled by the conditions of the house and animals.

A report was made to animal control officers who investigated the complaint. Crisp said the owner would not let officers into her home, but they were able to get photos and document what they saw outside. There was a large number of animals in a small space. The were no separate breeding areas, and no visible quarantine areas in case of illness. The yard was overgrown and the small pools for providing water to the dogs were growing over with green “stuff.”

In her investigation, Crisp also had to request and was able to obtain the owner's veterinarian records and discovered many of the animals had problems.

The officer took her documentation to Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Martin DeLeon who signed the order to have the dogs taken into custody.

Crisp said the 53 dachshunds were taken to the new animal control shelter where they were separated and treated individually by a local veterinarian.

On Monday, May 19, the dog owner was found guilty in DeLeon's court and assessed a fine.

As for the dachshunds, some were adopted out to local homes, but a majority were transferred to Austin where three animal rescue facilities welcomed them. All of the dogs are in foster homes, according to a report from Central Texas Dachshund Rescue. They will remain in these homes until they can be adopted out.

Crisp said in the meantime, due to word of mouth about this incident, the animal control officer has received two more reports of animal cruelty.

Anyone wishing to report an incident of animal cruelty may call the animal control office at 790-0151.
