Obituaries for April 30, 2008

HALLETT

Kaleb Jordan Hallett, five months, passed away April 26, 2008. He was born Nov. 26, 2007, in Victoria, to Shawn C. and Claire Moss Hallett, both of Victoria. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents; one brother, Karsten Hallett of Victoria; one sister, Kamryn Hallett of Victoria; grandparents, Johnnie and Kaye Hallett of Victoria, Art and Janet Gonthier of Victoria, and Martin and Dianna Moss of Rockport; great grandparents, Maxine Cone of Conroe and H.D. and Lena Rae Baker of Yoakum.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Victoria with Rev. James Shamburger officiating.  Interment will follow at Pilot Grove Cemetery near Yoakum at 2:30 p.m.

NEWBERRY


Coy Leroy Newberry passed away at his home on 24 April 2008. He was born on 11 July 1927 in Seiling, OK to Floyd Carroll and Mignon Katherine (King) Newberry. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Carl.

Coy was a Merchant Marine prior to entering the military in 1945. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1945 and was sent to Harlingen, TX for basic training and then on to what is now Lackland Air Force Base, TX where he was appointed as an Instructor. He became a Master Instructor and taught subjects such as Map Reading and Chemical Warfare. He was the NCOIC of the 3702 BMTS Drum & Bugle Corps which was formed to assist the Lackland Air Force Band in base parades and other activities. Many famous names became a part of this group including the 4 Saints, Harry James, Jr., son of Harry James & Betty Grable, and drummer comedian, Mickey Sharp from Pennsylvania, who became a close friend. Mickey became a drum instructor and won a world championship among military performers in Frankfurt, Germany; he entertained the troops working with the Bob Hope Show; performed for the Queen of England, and also played Las Vegas and in all 50 states.

Coy was stationed at various military installations as an Instructor, both overseas and the United States, in Texas, New York, California and Tennessee. He retired from the military as a Master Sergeant after 20 years of service.

He became a “good guy in the white hat” when he joined North Star Dodge at it's inception and for 11 years, selling new cars. He won many awards and trips thru his efforts. He moved on to sell new vehicles in the San Antonio and Boerne, TX area. When he retired, he moved to Rockport, TX.

Coy is survived by his wife, Alice of Rockport, TX; sons, Jerry Newberry, Danny Newberry and wife Diane from Canyon Lake and San Antonio, TX; one grandson and one great granddaughter; two brothers, Roy J. Shorb & Linda, and Dennis A. Shorb & wife Venita; several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

The family wishes to thank Vista Care of Corpus Christi, TX for their excellent service and for the wonderful caregivers who made Coy's last days comfortable.


Coy requested to be cremated and that there be no services. We are honoring his request.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation in his honor can be made to the charity of your choice.

OWENS


Freda Mae Owens passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008 at her residence at the age of 66. She was born February 14, 1942 in Mesa, AZ to Leroy Haynes & Nonaelwanda McEwen Haynes. Freda moved to Fulton in 1975 and was employed by ACISD as a custodian at the Fulton Elementary School for 23 years. Following her retirement she enjoyed birding and gardening and was an avid reader.

Freda was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of over 45 years, Jessie Dale Owens of Fulton; two daughters, Nona Owens Gravell & husband, John Gravell Jr. and Wanda Fernandez; three grandchildren, John Gravell III, Jake Fernandez & Jessica Fernandez; sister-in-law, Opal Owens all of Rockport; step-son, Richard Dean; step-daughter, Rhonda Gail; and two step-sisters, Pearl & Dottie.

Memorial services were held Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home Chapel in Rockport. Rev. Jim Huffman officiated. A reception for family and friends followed the memorial service in the family lounge at the funeral home. Interment will be private at a later date at Fulton Cemetery.
