In its first addition since 2002, the Rockport Center for the Arts unveiled its newest piece of public art, “Return of Ancient Wisdom” at a ceremony Saturday, April 12.

Sculptor Leo Osborne, who was present, created a rendition of the Kemp's Ridley turtle. The piece is a bronze cast from burl wood. The Kemp's Ridley sea turtle is of global and local significance.

John Aasp, director of visual arts, said the sculpture evokes the potential of art to raise awareness of our natural environment, and will be a permanent reminder of the ecological role of the Coastal Bend region. Aasp pointed out Dr. Donna Shaver of Padre Island National Seashore, chief of sea turtle science and recovery, also was in attendance.

The sculpture was made possible through the generosity of the Thomas W. Moore family and the Margaret Sue Rust Foundation. The Moore family, including board president Pat Moore and Capt. Tommy Moore were present, along with Susie Black of the Rust Foundation.

Texas State Rep. Juan Garcia presented a state resolution in honor of the late Lola L. Bonner, who was instrumental in the creation of the sculpture garden.

Rockport Mayor Todd Pearson talked about this city's history as an art community, noting the sculpture garden exists because of the initiative, vision and commitment by the Center for the Arts. He said it will be celebrated by generations not yet born. Referring to the fact Rockport was selected one of the top 10 artist colonies in the April edition of Coastal Living magazine, Pearson said the selection was not by chance, but by the hard work of all 300 artist residents.

Art Center board member and Moore family friend Lynn Lynn shared some personal thoughts about the elder Tom Moore.

She said the Kemp's Ridley turtle represents the Gulf Coast where Tom loved to be. He fished the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Amazon, the Caribbean, and his beloved Gulf Coast.

She said Moore was adventurous, generous, stylish and he wore gold Lone Star tuxedo studs. She said he collected many toys, boats, cars, TVs, computers, and power tools.

“The one that fascinated me was a gun you could aim at an object from 10 feet away and take its temperature,” Lynn said. “If I had that gadget and aimed it at those present today it would detect extremely warm hearts when we think of the Moore family.”

Lynn said the center is community based for supporting creativity and has been for 39 years.

“For those of us who love it, the people here are our family. This is our second home.

“Those of you who know Pat Moore know she spends a lot of time here working on behalf of the center. That is what prompted Tom to remark to Pat, many years before he was sick, ‘When I die, just bury me in the sculpture garden, that way I know you will come to visit me.”

She said Moore's spirit is here in the sculpture garden “where we can all visit him.”

She also noted none would be happier than Bonner. “This sculpture garden was so important to her. I know she is beyond pleased.”

She again thanked the Moore Family and the Rust Foundation, then led the way to the sculpture for the official unveiling which was conducted by Aasp and Shaver.
