MARRIOTT

Dr. George E. Marriott passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008. He was born September 28, 1928 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Thomas and Mary Marriott, who preceded him in death.

After graduation from St. John's Military School in 1946, George enlisted in the United States Army. George served four terms from 1946 until 1961, during which time he fought in the Korean conflict and earned numerous medals including the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal Japan, National Defense Service Medal, Gold Conduct Medal with Bronze Clasp/3 loops, United States Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. He also received a Medal of Appreciation from the President of South Korea.

He then continued his education, earning his Doctorate of Psychology from the University of Tulsa. George dedicated his life to helping others with a passion for working with disabled children. He served as Chief Psychologist at Hissom Memorial Center, a state-run institution, for 20 years. During this time he was innovative in developing a new technique of communication for children who were deaf, blind and mute, which he taught to educators and caregivers nationally. He also served as President of the Tri-State American Psychological Association, who honored him for his lifelong service at their National Convention in 2006. George continued his service to others as the Director of a seven-county mental health clinic in Oklahoma. His commitment to the military and psychology led him to work with Vietnam Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - a commitment that carried over into his work in Texas as well.

His desire to have further positive impacts upon his community drove him to be instrumental in forming a battered woman's shelter in Claremore, Oklahoma and serving on their board. In addition to his work within his own community, George and his wife Gayle spent two weeks in Oklahoma City following the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building, during which time they notified the families of their loved ones who had been lost during the tragedy. He was recognized for this service by the American Red Cross.

After moving to Rockport 12 years ago, George became the Director of Coastal Plains MHMR - Rockport where he served as the only Dr. of Psychology on staff until his retirement in 2007.

His love of Rockport and civil service led him to run for - and be elected to - the City Council where he served as representative for South Rockport and also as Mayor Pro Tem for six years. Additionally, George served on numerous boards and organizations in both Oklahoma and Texas.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle of Rockport; three sons, Mike Marriott of Claremore, Ok, Pete (Jennifer) Marriott of Sand Springs, OK and Keith (Pam) Walker of Cedar Park, TX; daughter Keisha (Matt) Cramblet of College Station, TX; brother Charles (Jean) Marriott of Apache Junction, AZ; sister Virginia Zilm of Fishers, IN and nine grandchildren.
