The Rockport-Fulton High School Fightin' Pirate band received a first division superior rating at the Region 14 University Interscholastic League Marching Contest Saturday, Oct. 20, and now advances to the area marching contest.
Band director Leland Knapp said this is a “major accomplishment,” for the band which has not received a superior rating since 1997.
Knapp said of the students, “We had a long talk several weeks ago about hard work and commitment and the students have finally reaped the rewards for a superior performance. They have worked very hard and put personal gratification aside for the sake of the band and Rockport-Fulton High School. I am very proud of these kids.”
He also pointed out the RFHS band is the only one in Region 14 which uses a color guard and a dance team during performance. He added, “It is a credit to our students to be able to work together for a common goal.”
He expressed appreciation to Rockport Middle School band director Kenneth Thurman, who also serves as high school percussion instructor for his valuable assistance.
He credited assistant band director Earla Picton and dance team director Molly Miller for their work in preparing the color guard and Emerald dance team for the competition
Knapp said the best news is the RFHS band is now eligible to participate in the area marching contest to be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Calallen High School.
The band director emphasized qualifying for the area marching contest is the equivalent of “making the play-offs” for Texas 4A bands.
RFHS can now be considered one of the best bands in South Texas by receiving this honor, said Knapp.
It was the band's second significant accomplishment in two weeks as they also took second place and received the drum line award in the Class 4A category at the 33rd annual Buccaneer Marching Band Festival at Blinn College in Brenham Saturday, Oct. 13. The band received a first division rating from three of the four marching judges for their performance of “A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson.”
Knapp said the Blinn judges were very complimentary of the students' performance and made suggestions for improving the show before the region UIL marching competition.
The schedule for Saturday's area contest has not yet been released, but will be publicized when/if made available.

Instead of presenting this to the scientific world in a peer reviewed journal, these guys publish it in this book in an attempt to sway public opinion. I could go on as many of the statements in this article are misleading, or blatantly ludicrous. Suffice it to say, it looks to me like this book is much more about influencing public opinion than any scientific review of whether human activity is causing climate change.
It is sad some people will believe this as fact. "
