Fulton Learning Center science teacher Martha McLeod was selected as regional elementary teacher of the year by the Region 2 Education Service Center. The area regional service center selected McLeod from its service area of 11 counties, 42 school districts and 252 campuses.
The center held a press conference last week to bestow the award as well as a $500 prize to McLeod, and the other region teacher of the year.
McLeod is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science with a major in animal science. She later earned postgraduate teacher certification from West Texas State University with biology specialization.
She has been teaching in the Aransas County Independent School District since 1993 beginning at then-Rockport-Fulton Intermediate School. She taught fifth and sixth grade science, social studies, reading and art.
In 1997, she moved to then-Live Oak Elementary, serving as the science lab teacher for second through fifth grades. She also worked as the campus science coordinator and science fair chairperson.
McLeod moved to Fulton Learning Center in 2002 and has been the science lab instructor for fifth graders since that time. She is solely responsible for instruction, tutoring, grading and TAKS test preparation for approximately 250 students. She continued to serve as science fair chairperson for that campus as well as the UIL sponsor for science. McLeod also served as a recycling program sponsor.
Beginning in 2005, she became the subject area coordinator for science, as well as the science lab instructor for fourth and fifth graders.
Her other duties include science fair chairperson, UIL sponsor for science, and recycling program sponsor.
She began a wildflower gardening/vegetable garden on the campus and serves as sponsor. She also became creator/sponsor of a campus aviary.
McLeod also serves as board member and school district liaison for Aransas First (a local environmental conservation and preservation organization).
She currently serves as a liaison with the Cabeza de Vaca Earthmobile Project and FLC staff to improve science instruction and gain acquisition of resources
She is a point of contact for the National Science Teachers Association's Building a Presence for Science program.
For five years, she served as a liaison with the South Texas Rural System Initiative and FLC staff to improve science instruction and gain acquisition of resources.
She is a past and/or present member of Science Teachers Association of Texas, R-F Aggie Club, Association of Texas Professional Educators, and National Science Teachers Association.
In August 2002 she was responsible for the development of a school-wide science curriculum scope and sequence, TAKS preparation tutoring program, science fair program, and the creation of weekly curriculum resource packets for homeroom teachers.
That year she also was responsible for the development of a school-wide science curriculum which aligned the TEKS within and across grade levels.
McLeod was named FLC Teacher of the Year in April. She received an elementary education teacher award for environmental conservation by the San Patricio Soil and Water Conservation District this year.
In 2004 she was named Elementary Education Teacher of the Year for Conservation and Environmental Stewardship by the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation.
In 2002, McLeod was a state semifinalist in the HEB teacher award program.
In 2000, she was selected as the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.
McLeod's commitment to her students is evident in that they consistently have scores 13 to 20 percentage points higher than the state average on the fifth grade science TAKS.
Her students consistently place in the top three at the Coastal Bend Science Fair. Last year one of the students won best of show honors.
Her students also consistently place in the top three at UIL science competitions. Last year students placed second, third, and 10th against other 4A schools.
McLeod's students consistently place in the top three in the USDA Soil and Water Conservation poster and essay contests. Last year they took first through third places in the poster contest. This year they placed first and third in the essay contest.
The science teacher also has received grants awarded to her science program every year since 2000 from the ACISD, ACISD Education Foundation, San Patricio Municipal Water District, or the Earthmobile Project.
As a region teacher of the year, McLeod will be honored along with all 40 of the state's regional teachers of the year at a November luncheon in Austin.
