The Rockport-Fulton Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome Port of The Rock. Members of the Bay Blazers and the board of directors were on hand to celebrate the occasion.
Port of The Rock is an inner city Christian church with an outreach to help those in crisis. Deborah Wright serves as pastor and director of the shelter. Kathryn Williams is in charge of children's ministries and is the house manager of the shelter.
The crisis aspect of the ministry is housing those in need of a shelter. Those considered as being in crisis are people who are homeless, those being released from jail, or those seeking safety from abuse.
The intervention part of the ministry is dedicated to stopping the crisis by reaching youngsters before they become statistics. The agency is starting a school for troubled youth with classes to begin this fall.
A support group for grandparents raising grandchildren also will be held. Aransas County has the highest statistics in the area for this and many of the children feel abandoned by their parents. The program is designed to support the grandparents and the children and to offer a network of help for them. Development classes for the crisis center also will be held.
Self-esteem, anger-management, and ministry classes also will be provided and will be open to the public.
Port of The Rock is located at 810 Henderson, Suite 6. The office houses the church/ministry offices and classrooms for the crisis, intervention, and development center. Please call 790-9889 for more information.
