Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor:
When I purchased property in Fulton in 1983, 401 Broadway Street, we had no trouble obtaining a business license for an antique shop and we were told Broadway Street was projected to be the main business street in Fulton. When was it zoned as residential?

Surely it is “downtown Fulton” and as such is subject to town development including businesses. Anything that brings business, prosperity and employment to Fulton must be good for Fulton as a community. Of course we can't please all the people all the time but any one who wants to live in a restricted residential community should consider the Country Club, Key Allegro, Harbor Oaks or a similar development zone.

I think is it disgusting anyone should be so prejudiced and almost slanderous in assuming a business not yet even operating would be so badly managed as to have overflowing dumpsters, strong odors of seafood and health hazards attracting rats. We have laws and inspections to maintain proper standards in any business. This is an insult to the people who only want to run a legitimate business which would be acceptable in most small town communities.

The Asian community here in Fulton was established by the U.S. government granting asylum to refugees from an Asian war where they fought alongside American troops. They have integrated very well as hardworking, law abiding and honest American citizens. Everyone deserves a chance to run a business and make an honest living in this wonderful land of opportunity. Some people have earned it more than others.

The site for the Sushi Bar has many established businesses around it. The house previously was used by him for business purposes, the selling of garden ornaments, cement sea gulls and such.

Julie Truong has lived in Fulton 20 years. She was the owner of three shrimp boats until she went out of business two years ago. She needs an income. She has many contacts in the shrimp and sea food industry and would easily manage a business that would be an asset to Fulton. There are also many established business properties in her area. Opposite to her property there is a huge boat barn.

Truong's business would be small and unobtrusive, similar to the one on Church Street in Rockport. One which has been operating for about one year and is very clean, not stinking of sea food.

I think we should keep Fulton progressive and encourage business initiatives.

I am happy to be a Fulton resident as it is.

Dear Editor:

The pictures of the painted turkeys have really upset my wife and me. We hope the ones responsible for this will be caught and severely punished with many hours of community service.

Equally disgusting is your “See What I Got” section. To glorify this senseless cruel activity is wrong. You send a bad message when you show a young boy or girl standing by a wild hog they've killed. These people don't kill animals for food. I doubt they would eat the animal anyway. I wish you would discontinue “See What I Got.”

Dear Editor:

This is in response to William Campbell regarding the painted turkeys.

Who is to say the suspect(s) didn't buy lead-based paint in Mexico and brought it back to Rockport. You do know they sell lead-based paint in Mexico, and have no warnings on the can (fact).

You must be a heartless human being to make a comment like that. The Humane Society does such good work with the animals in this county (fact). Not only that, they help Aransas County residents with stray animals they feed, plus they help get these strays neutered and spayed (fact). Some of us care about the stray animals and we care about the Humane Society.

The Humane Society needs all of our help for these defenseless animals (fact).

So Campbell just the facts.

Bobbi Olson
