A 37-year-old Rockport man attempting to cross Market Street was struck by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon, sending him into the lane of oncoming traffic. Two vehicles then collided as they attempted to avoid hitting him. According to a report by Department of Public Safety Trooper David Cordova, the man, Dennis Mohar, was crossing Market Street from a church to Steart Street. He started across, and then began to run according to a witness. Jeana George of Corpus Christi was driving a Ford Contour in the inside eastbound lane and swerved right to avoid hitting Mohar.
She was unable to miss him completely and the impact sent him into the lane of oncoming traffic.
Drivers of a four door F-350 pickup and a 2007 Toyota Camry both tried to avoid striking Mohar, and ended up colliding with each other.
Cordova said, “There intentions were good and they did the right thing, but were unable to avoid a collision.”
The trooper cited Mohar for failure to yield right of way to oncoming traffic, while not in a crosswalk.
Although Mohar sustained an injury to his head including a bump on the left side and several scrapes which were bleeding, he refused transport to a hospital.
He was treated at the scene, Cordova said, but on Thursday, went into the hospital complaining of a headache.
No other citations were issued.
